Windows 95 non è più un sistema operativo supportato su Virtual PC 2007. Tra le altre cose le Additions nuove non si installano. La soluzione per farle andare con Windows 95 è di installare le additions fornite con Virtual PC 2004 SP1, che funzionano anche con la nuova versione. Ho installato VPC2007 RC, rimuovendo prima per sicurezza la Beta precedente.
La cosa bella di VPC è che si installa e si rimuove senza reboot, anche se senza il reboot non va il drag&drop tra host e guest.
Devo dire che la prima impressione mi è piaciuta molto... tutti i settaggi erano al loro posto, esattamente come li avevo lasciati...
Ho poi lanciato la Virtual Machine contenente TFS RTM, ed è sparito il lag iniziale che si manifestava con Vista come host (mentre con XP come host non c'era problema). Ho aggiornato poi le VM Additions, che adesso sono in versione 13.802...

This occurs because compacting the differencing disk makes the undo disk file unusable. Can you create a virtual machine Windows Server 2003 guest being hosted in a Windows XP Virtual PC installation, and make the host XP machine a member of a domain running on the Windows 2003 Server?
Hint: Some have suggested to use a loopback adapter installed on the XP machine as the common link between them… although I don’t see why the physical adapter on on the XP machine wouldn’t work just as well.

Vi avevo annunciato un po' di tempo fa la disponibilità della patch per VPC2004 SP1 e i Centrino (KB8995259).
La patch è disponibile solo tramite il PSS di Microsoft, ma al momento varie "fonti" mi hanno confermato che sembra non risolvere il problema in tutti i casi...
Forse è per questo che non è ancora diventata pubblica...

Hanno risolto il problema di VPC 2004 SP1 con i Centrino (in particolare i modelli con il chipset Intel 915):

915 Intel chipset. The problem is that this chipset stops the TSC when
it enters C-2 power state.

Al momento non è ancora stata pubblicata...
Se non potete installare le Additions, ma volete comunque mantenere sincronizzati gli orologi della VM con quello del sistema host, potete sempre usare il servizio NTP.
Una serie di link utili su Google... qui in versione Windows (utili solo se proprio non potete installare le additions) e qui in versione Linux (sul quale le Additions non sono installabili...).

Windows 95 non supporta nativamente la piastra madre Intel 440BX, uscita successivamente al suo rilascio.
Però potete trovare i driver sul sito di Intel:

Naturalmente potrebbero esserci problemi con il processore, in quanto non virtualizzato ma esposto direttamente al SO Guest, ma con processori "normali" non dovreste avere problemi.

Con le VM Additions installate, la risoluzione massima supportata è 1600x1200.
Questo rende impossibile supportare monitor 16:9 o 16:10 come il 1920x1200 senza avere bande nere laterali...
Si spera anche in questo caso nella prossima release... anche perchè il supporto della sola S3 Trio 64 come scheda video inizia a mostrare i suoi limiti...

Microsoft has made a hotfix available for Virutal PC 2004 (post SP1) that fixes a bug that occurs when you leave a VirtualPC instance running, suspend your system, resume your system, and can no longer interact with the VirtualPC guest.
KB889677 - Describes the problem when the computer resumes from hibernation, Virtual PC 2004 stops responding temporarily.

Me lo chiedevo proprio stamattina... E ora ho avuto la risposta!!!
A regular question I hear is "How can I stop Virtual PC from storing all of my virtual machines in the 'My Virtual Machines' folder in 'My Documents'?". The answer is simple - but obscure. To change this you need to create a system environment variable called 'MYVIRTUALMACHINES' with a value of the path that you want Virtual PC to use for the default location for storing virtual machines.

Oggi giornata di modifiche... in pausa pranzo ho modificato ancora l'articolo su VPC e gli harddisk differenziali su segnalazione di Raffaele.
Oltre alle FAQ di stamattina, ho modificato la parte che spiega come generare un nuovo SID per il PC virtuale (per evitare problemi in rete) attraverso l'uso di Sysprep e/o NewSID.
Tutto è scaturito dall'osservazione di Raf che Sysprep richiede un reboot, e quindi va fatto dopo il Virtual Disk Precompactor e prima del Virtual Disk Wizard per compattare fisicamente il file.
Visto che Sysprep non è immediatissimo da usare, ho aggiunto anche la possibilità di usare NewSID, che però va fatto sulla macchina...
Visto che pochissimi sanno cosa sono gli HD differenziali, e ancora meno persone li usano... ecco come fare:

Fatemi sapere cosa ne pensate... naturalmente è uno step by step, quindi quasi un for dummies, ma spero sia utile...

Questo tip si applica a tutti i sistemi operativi Windows a prescindere se girano su VPC, VMWare o PC veri.
E va fatto soprattutto su Windows Server 2003 che di default è impostato a None.
Per regolarlo: pannello di controllo, Display, Settings, Advanced, Troubleshooting, mettete sempre a Hardware Accelleration a Full.
Altrimenti non lamentatevi che mouse e video a volte vanno a scatti...

Da www.virtualization.info leggo e riporto la notizia dell'uscita di un libro sulla VPC 2004: The Rational Guide To Microsoft Virtual PC 2004.
Devo dire che la serie "The Rational Guide" è un po' particolare, a metà fra un libro introduttivo sullo stile dei "For dummies" e un libro un po' più avanzato.
Questo non l'ho ancora letto, ma quello sui Sql Server Reporting Services mi era piaciuto abbastanza, soprattutto perchè mi aveva chiarito le idee sulle potenzialità del prodotto. Naturalmente poi bisogna approfondire, ma secondo me il libro aveva centrato il target.
Speriamo che anche questo (dello stesso autore/editore) ottenga lo stesso risultato.

Questo Tip vale soprattutto se come SO guest avete Windows 2003.
Se il CD-ROM/DVD ATAPI è impostato in modalità DMA nel SO guest, l'apertura di My Computer potrebbe impiegarci più di 10 secondi, dovuti proprio al timeout della modalità DMA.
Se avete questo problema, dovete impostare il CD-ROM/DVD su PIO Only. Per farlo dovete (sempre nel SO guest) andare su Device Manager/ IDE ATA-ATAPI controllers/ Secondary IDE Channel/ Advanced Settings/Device 0 e imporstare PIO Only.
Di default dopo sei tentativi che vanno in timeout Windows va automaticamente in PIO Only (vedi KB817472) ma questo potrebbe non verificarsi, oppure essere annullato da...

Se avete la neccessità di fare il boot da dischetto MS-DOS e volete utilizzare la scheda di rete della Virtual PC avete bisogno dei driver che potete trovare qui:
DOS network adapter driver (dc21x4.dos) http://developer.intel.com/design/network/drivers/sla_ndis2.htm
Naturalmente i driver vanno copiati sul dischetto nel PC host, perchè senza le Virtual PC Additions e senza i driver non è possibile usare la scheda di rete...

Virtual PC 2004 supporta nativamente solo la Sound Blaster 16, che non è più supportata da Windows 2003 Server.
Questo provoca (oltre alla mancanza dei suoni) un rallentamento al boot del sistema operativo, che ogni volta cerca di riconoscere la periferica mancante...
Per poterla utilizzare dovete procedere in questo modo:
Copiate i file wdma_ctl.inf e ctlsb16.sys da un CD di Windows XP in una cartella nel sistema operativo guest.
Nel Device Manager, selezionate la Sound Blaster 16 e cliccate Update Driver
Navigate fino alla cartella dei driver che avete copiato ed...

Durante l'installazione del sistema operativo Guest impostate "Run Virtual PC at Maximum Speed" tra le opzioni di performance.
Questo ha portato da 3 ore a poco più di un'ora l'installazione di Windows 2003 Server...
Poi appena installato il SO Guest, se possibile (vedi, su Windows ) installate SUBITO le Virtual PC Additions, che tra le altre cose abilitano tutta una serie di impostazioni per rendere più performante il sistema ospite...
