Surface Area Configuration

For improved manageability and security, SQL Server 2005 provides more control over the SQL Server surface area. To minimize the server surface area, some features and services are disabled by default for new installations. For upgrades, all features and services remain unchanged. This is done in the interest of ensuring that the upgrade process is as smooth as possible with no surprises.

To configure the SQL Server surface area, use the Surface Area Configuration tool, which you can launch from the last Setup dialog box and from the Start menu (Start> All Programs> Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CTP> Configuration Tools > SQL Server Surface Area Configuration).
