Support for Microsoft® Java Virtual Machine
As a valued Microsoft customer we wanted to remind you of upcoming limitations regarding our ability to provide continued support for the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. In a settlement agreement reached in January 2001 to resolve a dispute over Microsoft's distribution of its Java implementation, Sun and Microsoft agreed to limit the duration of Microsoft's use of Sun's source code and compatibility test suites to support the MSJVM.
Recognizing the need to provide a smooth transition for current users of the MSJVM, Sun Microsystems and Microsoft have agreed to a license extension, which allows Microsoft to support the MSJVM through September 30, 2004. This extension gives Microsoft the ability to address potential security issues, effectively giving customers another year to manage the transition. Microsoft is committed to supporting the MSJVM throughout this extended period.
Going forward, the MSJVM will not be included in any future Microsoft products.
If you have Java-language applications used by employees, partners, or customers that require the MSJVM to function correctly you will need to address this as part of your company’s transition plan. Microsoft is providing customers using the MSJVM several tools and options designed to help smooth the transition and migration to alternate solutions tailored to the individual needs of each organization. As in any transition you should begin analysis and transition plans as early as possible to allow adequate time for testing prior to deployment.
