E' da dopo le ferie che uso con profitto il Best Practice Analyzer, e finalmente posso mostrarlo pubblicamente.

La schermata iniziale permette di selezionare varie attività, ma generalmente si parte creando una nuova analisi:

L'analisi può avere un nome, si può specificare il server da analizzare, si può specificare se analizzare il server "già installato" o se verificare i prerequisiti. Si può scegliere di analizzare solo il server o anche il client, e funziona sia con server singoli, sia con server AT e DT separati.

Lo scanning è abbastanza veloce, non c'è un'indicazione delle attività restanti perchè mano a mano che vengono analizzate se ne possono aggiungere altre, ma viene mostrato chiaramente cosa sta succedendo.

  
 
I risultati mostrano i problemi, i warning e le informazioni generali. Vengono raccolte TUTTE le informazioni rilevanti che possono eventualmente essere inviate agli "esperti" (non inondatemi ...) o al PSS di Microsoft.

Vi consiglio di lanciarlo sui vostri TFS, rimarrete stupiti dalle informazioni raccolte o dai suggerimenti che vengono poi dati in risposta ad eventuali problemi o warning.

Ve ne parlavo giovedì e ora Brian ha postato le novità incluse in questa "technical refresh".

Yesterday we released a refreshed build of TFS 2008 Beta 2.  Why did we do this?  The reason is that we have had a fair number of reports of installation issues.  Our installation process is instrumented with Dr. Watson logging and will send information about successes and failures and logs on the errors that were hit for us to analyze.  In those logs, we've seen a few significant issues.  But even more importantly, we discovered that logging was disabled on a portion of the TFC installer and that we were unable to diagnose a class of failures as a result.

...In the next week, we should have our second round of TFS Beta 2 patches available...

...In mid-Oct we are going to be producing our first release candidate build.  We will not be distributing this broadly but we will be making it available for a handfull of external customers to try.  If you are interested in trying this, send me your email address and details about your configuration - OS, topology, WSS version, new install/upgrade, etc...

Come anticipato dall'amico Aldo sono usciti i nuovi Power Tools per Team Foundation Server 2005. Richiedono il Team Explorer 2005 installato, ma molti funzionano con il Team Explorer 2008 se si modifica il file di config con gli opportuni redirect sulle DLL che danno errore.

Attenzione che questi Power Tools possono essere usati sia verso TFS 2005, sia verso TFS 2008, il problema è solo la presenza del Team Explorer 2005 sulla macchina client.

Mi piace molto il TFS Best Practice Analyzer (basato su PowerShell) che usavo da alcuni mesi in alpha e mi ha aiutato nel trovare problemi e configurazioni non corrette presso i clienti.

Il tool permette di validare TFS sia lato server, sia lato client (Team Explorer), e può essere usato sia prima dell'installazione per validare i prerequisiti in maniera dettagliata, sia dopo l'installazione per "tarare" la configurazione.

I WorkItem Templates invece sono molto comodi per chi deve creare sempre i "soliti" WorkItem, cosa che spesso richiedeva la scrittura di plugin appositi.

Post bellissimo. Trovo spesso architetti rimasti a Classic ASP, VB6 e COM, oppure a .NET 1.1, remoting e ASMX.

Il mondo è cambiato, e spesso non basta andare alle conferenze per tenersi aggiornati. Bisogna provarle sulla propria pelle le cose, verificarne soprattutto i limiti, altrimenti è dura poterne parlare con consapevolezza.

A very common career path in IT "promotes" a coder over the years to a program manager with architect responsibilities. And being an architect they stop writing code themselves. The thing I see over and over again is that these people keep living in the programming environment in which they grew up. They did loads of work in VB 6 or classical ASP. When a new piece of software has to be designed, which quite often is supposed to do something similar to the things they built themselves in their heydays, they grab their old projects to demonstrate what they have in mind. Right now I'm facing an ASP.NET site which has to build dynamic pages on the fly based on dynamic sets of data. And the lead architect bases his ideas on an ancient asp site he built years ago. Given the tools of those days it is a well crafted product but in nature it is just plain old asp spitting out html top to bottom. Given today's tools we can write far clearer, more powerful and better maintainable code building an asp.net control tree and leave the rendering of the html to the framework. But our lead architect doesn't know this framework.

The good thing about my lead is that he is very open minded and eager to learn about today's tools. But it would be so much better if working and coding with them would be part of his work. How can you be a good architect when you don't know your building materials or construction tools?

Ho letto oggi il post dell'amico Emanuele sui framework di Test, e sono rimasto basito da questa frase:

...MS Test che praticamente nessuno usa (che senso aveva farlo?)...

Cosa vuol dire "praticamente nessuno"?

Il commento di Antonio fa un po' di chiarezza:

Che lo Unit Testing di MS sia poco utilizzato è dovuto solo al fatto che viene distribuito con le versioni più costose di VS2005, ma con VS2008 la musica dovrebbe cambiare visto che MS è intenzionata a rilasciare il suo Unit Testing anche con la versione Pro di VS.

Ora aggiungo la mia, ma non volevo che si perdesse in un commento che magari in molti non leggono nemmeno:

• MSTest non include solo gli Unit Test, ma anche i Web Test, i Load Test, gli Unit Test sui DB, i Generic Test, gli Ordered Test, etc... etc... a seconda delle edizioni
• Con MSTest è banale (leggasi 1 click rispettivamente) fare Profiling degli Unit Test o averne il Code Coverage
• MSTest è integrabile nativamente (leggasi con un click rispettivamente) nelle Team Build e nelle CheckIn Policy
• MSTest non è usato dai guru dell'ALT.NET? E chissenefrega, conosco svariate realtà di piccole, medie e grndi dimensioni in Italia e all'estero che non hanno tempo di installare NUnit/MbUnit, NANT, NCover, NCoverExplorer, CruiseControl.NET, NANT, TDD.NET per fare quello che fanno con VSTS e TFS.
• Non dico che i software della famiglia ALT.NET non vadano usati, dico solo che non è che vanno bene solo perchè fanno più figo chi li usa... conosco realtà molto blasonate che li usano con profitto, ma ciò non vuol dire che nessuno usa MS Test...
• Non venitemi a parlare di costi. Lo so che MSTest non è alla portata dello sviluppatore hobbysta, ma in molte realtà aziendali la necessità di imparare, configurare, gestire, aggiornare, etc... svariati software opensource con cicli di vita molto differenziati non vale il risparmio, che con la 2008, dove gli Unit Test sono inclusi a partire dalla Professional, è ancora più basso.
• Attenzione! Sono felice per l'esistenza e per il successo di NUnit, MbUnit, TDD.NET, xUnit.Net e chi più ne ha più ne metta, altrimenti non ci sarebbe MSTest, e soprattutto non ci sarebbero le molteplici novità presenti in Visual Studio 2008, dalla possibilità di lanciare i test direttamente a la TDD.NET, alla maggiore velocità di esecuzione quando ci sono solo Unit Test che non richiedono la presenza di un ambiente di test "completo", che nella 2005 veniva sempre creato, rallentando la partenza dei test.

Mi piacerebbe sapere la fonte del "praticamente nessuno usa", bisognerebbe forse dire "che può usare solo chi ha Visual Studio Team System", almeno nella versione 2005...

Era da giorni che la aspettavo, in passato bisognava installare il Team Explorer del 2005 anche su TFS 2008.

Può essere usata con TFS2005, ma bisogna mettere il Team Explorer 2005.

Due tip in uno: come montare un file di registry diverso da quello di default, e come farlo con un VHD...

You can edit the registry of a VM without having to power it up.  A rough guide is below:

• Use VHDMOUNT.EXE to mount the VHD: vhdmount.exe /m /f Harddisk.vhd
• Mount the registry: reg load HKLM\VHD c:\mount\windows\system32\config\software
• Use Regedit and make your changes - browse to HKLM\VHD
• Close Regedit.exe
• Unmount the registry:  reg unload HKLM\VHD
• Unmount the VHD:  VHDMOUNT.EXE /U ALL

Io lo faccio ora... il 5 Ottobre se no me lo dimentico.

L'insegnante che ha cambiato il corso della mia vita (anzi le insegnanti) sono state tre... tutte professoresse di inglese:

• In Prima Media la prima prof di inglese mi ha dato insuff. perchè non capiva la mia scrittura in corsivo. Da allora scrivo in stampatello o al PC...
• In Seconda Superiore la prof di inglese mi ha fatto capire che essere il cocco della prof più carina dell'istituto poteva avere svantaggi e vantaggi... gli svantaggi erano i compagni "gelosi"... il resto è sotto NDA (ma non pensate male...)
• In Quarta e Quinta Superiore la prof di inglese mi ha fatto capire che gran gnocca, pantaloncino corto, stivali sopra il ginocchio e collant con la riga dietro possono anche far perdere la concentrazione, e quindi far rischiare un 4. Per fortuna le mie doti di multitasking occhio-cervello-penna si sono affinate, e alla fine riuscivo a guardarla tutto il tempo, scrivere e prendere 8... questa dote è presente ancora oggi...

I wrote a lot of image (and not only image) processing algorithms. Most of them were for military proposes. Almost all of them are not secret, so why not to use war technologies for peace manners? Sitting one of those long evenings, I wrote a simple application, that seeks for similar (not by name of cause) images in your hard disk and make you able to delete them. I will not explain the search algorithm here, but post the application for free download. Try it, use it and tell me what you think about.
