Quindi... non usatela se non dovete testare i vostri siti!

Team Foundation Server contiene una serie di funzionalità per gestire e raccogliere le informazioni di progetto, che aiutano molto il project manager, e i vari membri del team a essere sempre aggiornati su quello che si sta facendo. Permette poi di impostare policy che tutti i membri del team devono seguire per migliorare la qualità degli elaborati prodotti.In questa sessione verrà mostrato come utilizzare al meglio il Team Explorer e gli altri strumenti (plug-in per Project, Excel, project portal, etc..) per interfacciarsi con il Team Foundation Server.

Vi aspetto tutti, PM, architetti, geometri e muratori... ehm... intendevo dire PM, architetti, designer, sviluppatori, etc...

Un paio di info:

• a differenza dei precedenti sarà un webcast molto più pratico... sono stufo di mostrare quasi solo slide, anche se era necessario conoscere la metodologia prima del tool!
• le demo sono fatte con la versione distribuita da Microsoft come virtual machine su msdn e alle varie conferenze, così potete fare anche voi gli esperimenti... alcune cose sicuramente cambieranno nella prossima RC, eventualmente farò qualche post "correttivo"...
• in questi giorni ho avuto parecchi problemi personali, e domani terrò il webcast da casa... speriamo vada tutto per il meglio...

Nei prossimi giorni verrà aggiornata la pagina con i prossimi 7 webcast su VSTS, (sono in ritardo lo so... scusate... per fortuna si riparte da marzo...).

After a couple of weeks silence I finally have recovered from one week in Seattle and half a week of traveling in Finland.

E la prima cosa che ho fatto è stata sostituire le varie diciture "processi formali", "MSF formale", etc... con "processi tradizionali".

Mi è tornato in mente una "lamentela" di Marco Abis ai tempi della prima CTP di MSF 4, quando aveva osservato che chiamarli "formali" implicava che i processi agili siano "informali".

La parola migliore che ho trovato è stata "tradizionali", se però avete altri suggerimenti... sono tutto orecchie...

P.s. entro le dieci di domani mattina (lunedì) perchè poi devo stampare le slide!

Oggi al webcast una delle domande riguardava il provider per il source control per VB6 e la sua integrazione con il sistema di work item tracking.

Proprio stasera arriva l'annuncio delle modifiche previste per la release di febbraio:

Finalmente è previsto il supporto anche per VS2003, l'integrazione con i work item e le checkin notes...

Sembra che manchino solo le checkin policies, ma spero si possano rendere obbligatori work item e checkin notes. In questo modo resterebbe fuori solo la parte di Code Analysis, Unit Testing e poco altro... ma che comunque non sono supportate dagli ambienti precedenti in maniera nativa...

Ed ecco una spiegazione sul perchè non si è usato il vecchio formato per i provider, ma ne è stato inventato uno nuovo:

Team Foundation Version Control’s integration with Visual Studio was not written using MSSCCI primarily because it did not provide the control over the user interface needed.  The MSSCCI spec is optimized for quick and easy integration for version control providers at the expense of control over the user interface.  From the beginning TFVC was designed around a rich checkin experience that would be rather clunky if it were centered around the existing Pending Checkin toolwindow and checkin dialog.

More version control vendors are moving to Visual Studios SCCI (Source Code Control Interface) as a means of providing integration.  This API requires more work by the vendor but gives more control to the vendor on the user experience.

 If you need MSSCCI to access TFVC, please give the TFVC MSSCCI provider a try and give us feedback.

The guys at SecuredDimentions have something new up their sleeve. If you don't know them, it's because they are relatively new on the market. What they've designed is what seems to be a very good way to prevent code-theft, i.e. someone decompiling your .NET applications, without the need to use code obfuscators. They are actually offering this as part of a suite of licensing service, all underlined with their technology to protect .NET code.

Technically, it's a bit hard to explain, but they are able to do something called "code partitioning" on selected parts of the code base and "decrypt" them on demand, using their own virtual runtime which sits on top of the CLR. This also allows them to detect whenever "important" code was reached and do anything about it (like a popup dialog for example).

...CUT...If you come from a small scale software shop, or only have a couple of customers, it might seem like all fixes take about 2 hours and can be released the afternoon after you compile it.  After all if it doesn't work just apologize and try something else the next day.  Ahhh the good old days. ...CUT... But things are of a bit of a different scale if your site or software works in different languages, runs on different systems, support millions of users, etc.

I've seen a lot of people of people commenting about how buggy SmartNavigation is and why you don't want to use it, and I'm not disagreeing with any of them - I've never used the feature myself, but if they say so, then I believe them. However, if using View Source comes up different, what you're seeing is an IE behaviour, and has nothing to do with SmartNavigation screwing things up.

I’ve gotten some feedback from Visual Basic .NET developers having trouble following my “How To” on code coverage and IL Merge. I turns out that the Visual Basic .NET 2005 compiler doesn’t support the InternalsVisibleTo attribute. After adding the attribute to an assembly, you won’t get any IntelliSense for the internal, or fiend in Visual Basic lingo, members. When you try to build the solution the compiler will raise a BC30390 compilation error...

Ottimizzare TFS significa soprattutto ottimizzare le tecnologie su cui si basa (AD, Sql, WSS, etc...).

So here are some pointers found during our testing:

1. Manually grow TempDB - ... SQL Server reverts back to the original TempDB size upon re-start - thereby you incur the cost again after every restart...

2. Use multiple equal sized data files - if you are using a multi-processor data tier, use N equal sized data files (when N is the # of processors, the sum of all the data files can equal 20% of all your databases)...

There is so much to say about the italian developer community. One of the largest european web sites ASP Italia by Daniele Bochicchio, famous speaker and writer like Dino Esposito and Francesco Balena, great events like SMAU and ... the largest european INETA User Group UGIdotNET [1] in Milano. I will never forget the video from multiplex cinema in Milano with Andrea dressed as a Spiderman speaking to the hunders of user group members. There is no chance to talk about everyone, but I would like to introduce you my dear friends and fellows Andrea Saltarello [2], Vice President Marketing at INETA Europe, Lorenzo Barbieri [3], INETA Regional Lead for South Europe and a new member of italian Speakers Registry. Pierre Greborio [4]. They are MCTs, MVPs, community leaders and they certainly know how to play soccer. Guys, you just rock!
