As of today, we finally have a W3C recommendation for how to efficiently encode binary data in an XML Infoset (XOP), and a SOAP binding for that encoding that's based on Multipart MIME framing (MTOM). Congrats Gudge and the rest of the XOP/MTOM crew! Our product team is really excited about this spec, and it should turn up in our products pretty soon - Indigo beta1 and the WSE3 beta will both have support for MTOM.

At various times it is convenient to be able to identify the host computer from inside of a virtual machine in a programatic fashion (e.g. When you are deploying a virtual machine or running an automated process).  To help in these scenarios both Virtual Server and Virtual PC 2004 SP1 will populate the virtual machines registry with information on the name of the host computer, and the name assigned to the virtual machine under Virtual PC or Virtual Server.

This information is only available on virtual machines running Windows 95 through Windows Server 2003 with Virtual Machine Additions installed - and is stored in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Guest\Parameters].

You can retrieve this information using the following VBScript:

Mvp.Xml project is developed by Microsoft MVPs in XML technologies and XML Web Services worldwide. It is aimed at supplementing .NET framework functionality available through the System.Xml namespace and related namespaces such as System.Web.Services.

This release includes Common, XInclude.NET and XPointer.NET modules.

The Common module includes a set of commonly useful classes in Mvp.Xml.Common and Mvp.Xml.Common.XPath namespaces, which extend the .NET functionality available through the System.Xml and related namespaces. Se non volete usare SysPrep potete sempre usare NewSid di Winternals...

 

You might want to create a “base” virtual machine with the operating system and applications you want, and then copy its .vhd file to use for other virtual machines. Before you make copies of the .vhd, however, it’s important to run Sysprep in the guest operating system. This way, the first time you start a virtual machine that uses a copy of the base virtual machine’s .vhd file, the guest operating system will be assigned a new SID and other identifiers, so you won’t end up with network conflicts between different virtual machines that use the same copied .vhd file.

It's not that it's difficult to convert code from Visual Basic .NET to C#, or to simply create code that automates Word or Excel in C#. What caused me pain in this particular project was that when you attempt to communicate with objects designed to be consumed by VBA clients, you're living in a world that didn't take C# and its design goals into account when it was being created. One thing is for sure: because of its VBA lineage, it's a lot easier accomplishing Office automation from Visual Basic .NET than it is from C#. I can't dig into the details here, so I'll just point out a few delectable tidbits, with links to more info later on.

There have been a number of people reporting that when they start a virtual machine - they get the following error:

The network adapter with address "00:00:00:00:00:00" of virtual machine "...." failed to initialize because the address is a null address.

To fix this problem you should use REGEDIT to:

1. Examine the key value at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318}\\DriverDesc to locate the desired host adapter where is a four digit number.
2. Look at the GUID value for the NetCfgInstanceId key value.
3. Add the DWORD key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VPCNetS2\Parameters\Adapters\\Flags and set the value to 0 where is the GUID found in step 2.
4. Restart the computer.

This registry value was added in Virtual PC SP1’s Virtual Machine Network Services driver. It is supposed to be setup during installation by the driver’s notify object. However, under certain circumstances the notify object of the old version is used during the installation of the new version and this registry value is never created. It is used by the driver to determine if a particular host adapter can be used in the MAC address generation algorithm. If the key is not present, we assume that the host adapter cannot be. In the case you experienced, none of your adapters appear suitable as a basis for MAC address generation and the driver returns a NULL MAC address which causes VPC to report the error.

Finding a way around that kind of bug is a nightmare.

I'm writing this blog entry to share an exciting bit of news from SourceGear:  We have decided to announce the fact that we are developing a new product which will be released later this year.  The code-name for this new product is "Allerton".  In a nutshell, Allerton is a Linux/Solaris/MacOS client for Team Foundation.

How much will Allerton cost?

Pricing for this product has not yet been announced.   Don't ask me about it.   I'm not saying anything until we make an official announcement.

When will this product ship?

We plan to release Allerton later this year in the same time frame as Visual Studio 2005.   We will demo the product at our booth at Tech-Ed in June.

Isn't this a big change in SourceGear's strategy?

No.   SourceGear has two main products, SourceOffSite and Vault.   These two products are very different. One is a SourceSafe add-on, and the other is a SourceSafe replacement. Vault and SourceOffSite are very distinct.   They are developed by two different teams.

It may seem goofy for the company who makes Vault to develop an add-on product for somebody else's source control tool.  But Allerton is the next logical step for the SourceOffSite side of our company.  Just as SourceOffSite is an add-on for SourceSafe, Allerton is an add-on for Team Foundation.

Where does the name "Allerton" come from?

Allerton Park is a really cool place, not too far from SourceGear's office.  If you hate this code-name, don't worry -- it's just a placeholder to be used until we figure out the real product name.

A mio parere occorre tenere ben presente questi concetti quando si parla di opensource, perchè spesso dietro la bandiera della libertà, si nascondono le mire monopolistiche di grossi nomi dell'informatica che hanno buon gioco sfruttando il pregiudizio che fomentano nella gente.

Onestamente mi ha sempre fatto ridere leggere "XXX appoggia l'Open Source" oppure "XXX investe 1Mln di $$$ nell'Open Source"...

Mi è sempre parso di vedere una grande operazione marketing e di mercato, anche perchè comunque le cashcow di quelle aziende col cavolo che sono state rese OS...

Hanno investito nell'OS per fare un'operazione di dumping in mercati in cui comunque non guadagnavano una lira... Si veda che fine ha fatto l'"Età Visuale" che è stata letteralmente "Eclissata"...

Peccato era uno scoop molto interessante... Ma potete trovare qualcosa su bink

Tutti mi dicono che è bellissimo... ma a me non sembra proprio...

La cosa più rognosa dei corsi Microsoft è il setup...

Quando leggo "8 ore per preparare l'aula" mi viene l'orticaria...

Lunghe procedure, installa questo, poi quello, etc.. etc...

Per fortuna però tutto sta cambiando. Con i nuovi corsi basati su Virtual PC sarà molto più semplice configurare le aule, soprattutto per chi come me non ha una struttura che se ne occupa...

L'unica seccatura è la procedura di gestione delle chiavi di attivazione, un po' seccante.

Alla fine ho fatto la scelta di salvarmi le immagini già "attivate", le comprimo e le metto su DVD+R per usi futuri, per non dover rifare la noiosissima procedura.

Comunque per gli studenti dovrebbe essere un bel passo in avanti...
